Studies from a recent study suggest that disturbances in the gut may enhance the aggression in some schizophrenic patients but not others. The findings were published in BMC Psychiatry.

50 patients with schizophrenia were included in the study. It was observed that pro-inflammation, pro-oxidation, and leaky gut biomarkers were increased among schizophrenic patients with aggression compared to those without aggression. Additionally, aggressive schizophrenic patients also showed lower levels of alpha diversity, evenness of the fecal bacterial community, several beneficial gut bacteria and increased levels of the fecal genera Prevotella. Decrease in six short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and six neurotransmitters were also observed in aggressive groups.

The findings imply that systemic pro-inflammation and pro-oxidation are both involved in the onset of aggression in schizophrenia, and that gut dysbacteriosis with leaky gut appears to be a key factor in the pathogenesis.
